THE MODERN ESSENTIAL FOR OUTDOOR LIVING
Nothing beats a relaxed day in the great outdoors without having to leave home. But to make the most of your exterior space, you need an escape from the blistering sun. Enter the cabana – the ultimate backyard accessory.
Although the concept of a roofed structure providing shade is nothing new, contemporary cabanas have become much more than mere shelters. They have evolved into sophisticated 'outdoor rooms' that, depending on how they are outfitted, can function as relaxed lounging areas, home bars, barbecue spaces, open-air movie theatres, and more.
There are options to suit all budgets and lifestyles. To get maximum enjoyment from your pool deck, garden, or beachside space. Consider the following:
LOCATION
Where you place your cabana will be dictated by the view, the prevailing breeze, and access to plumbing and utilities. Often, cabanas will adjoin a pool or be situated close to the beach to minimise the wet, sandy feet that traipse through the house in search of bathrooms, drinks, snacks, and more.
WALLS OPTIONAL
The one essential is a roof, but walls are optional. The simplest cabanas are essentially pergolas that provide shade but let the breeze blow through. You may choose to install roll-down screens to keep the mosquitoes away at sunset, or you may prefer to build one, two or three walls for added privacy and to make it usable in all weather.
STYLE AND MATERIALS
Cabanas can match or contrast with your main house. Consider a traditional thatched roof for a more rustic cabana, billowing curtains and creeping plants for a romantic retreat, or opt for natural stone, hardwoods and marble for a sleek, elegant extension to your home.
FUNCTION
How do you want to use your cabana? Furnish it with a dining table and chairs if you want to enjoy leisurely lunches and casual dinners outdoors, equip it with a barbecue or pizza oven if it’s the cook-out experience you want, or install a good size fridge, sink, and counter space to create your own pool or beach bar. Daybeds and comfortable sofas will turn a cabana into a relaxing outdoor living room, and a large-screen TV will allow you to watch the latest movie or sports match without having to retreat indoors.
WORK WITH THE ELEMENTS
Exposure to the sun, salt, and wind will inevitably have an impact, so be sure to choose high-quality, durable materials, furniture, and lighting that are designed for the outdoors.
Whether you go for rustic or modern, luxurious or functional, a cabana creates an extension of your home that allows you to truly enjoy the sunny days and warm nights that make living in the Caribbean such a privilege.
